Fellow Libertarians,

We are fast approaching the highlight event of the semester for LL/YAL: the Students for Liberty Texas Conference. If you haven’t already signed up and you intend to come, YOU NEED TO SIGN UP IMMEDIATELY!!! Why, pray tell? Because registration shuts down on Monday morning! We have to give a final number to the caterer next Monday, so if you decided to come after this deadline I won’t have any of our awesome food for you. The only option available after Monday morning will be BASIC Registration, which will not include Lunch or Dinner.

I don’t know how else to persuade you to come, but it’s going to be AWESOME. Just look at the conference page on our website and check out the speakers. Gene Healy, Mary Ruwart, Nigel Ashford… You don’t get better than this anywhere in Texas. Why on earth would you want to be anywhere else on October 24?

So get signed up TODAY on the website via the registration page. This conference was planned with YOU in mind, so plan on being there bright and early at 8am on October 24 and spend your day learning about freedom!

Due to a miscommunication a few weeks ago TAG was unable to present to our group, but we rescheduled, and we are excited to have them with us this week.

This Tuesday we will be joined by Chuck Young and John Bush, Treasurer and Executive Director respectively, of Texans for Accountable Government (TAG). TAG is a Political Action Committee based in Austin that actively promotes liberty in local policies. TAG was founded a little over a year ago and has already fought battles against “Vampire” Cops, the Domain Subsidies, and the placement of a Homeland Security intelligence center in Austin.

Tag has met with incredible success in such a short time and Tuesday night they will be sharing their message of “Humanize, Harmonize, and Localize” with us, and how we can all be better local activists.

This is a really exciting and active group and we are honored to have them with us, so be sure and come by this week to check them out.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2009 from 8-19pm in ETC 2.132. Here is a map to the building: http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/etc.html

An informal gathering at Posse East will follow, and everyone is welcome to come and get to know one another better after the meeting. Karaoke nights at Posse are SO much fun.

This week Robert Butler, executive director of the Travis Country Libertarian Party, will be giving the second installment in a series of seminars on libertarian Leadership and Candidacy. This workshop in particular is essential to learning how to manage a campaign and how to raise funding. Not only is this seminar relevant to any future public office goals you might have, but some of the ideas to be presented can be readily applied to our organization at UT.

The meeting will be on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 7 pm in ETC 2.312 on campus. Here’s a map http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/etc.html

We are so lucky to hear the nuts and bolts of how an election is run from a guy who really knows his stuff, and I expect this will be a very informative meeting.

More information about this workshop can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=128639173055

Join us for karaoke, drinks, and eats (all ages welcome) at Posse East after the meeting.

We’ve been waiting all summer for it. This week Dan gives another one of his historically hilarious and insightful presentations, this time on the folly of socialism. Here’s what it’s about in his own words:
“My presentation is on the calculation problem of socialism. I’ll explain why socialism will always always fail miserably, and everyone should try to come because I worked really hard to make this presentation clear and entertaining.
I tried to explain the problem step-by-step, so that anyone can understand it! Also, the arguments I make are not to be found in an ordinary economics class and are not yet understood very well by many libertarians outside the Austrian camp, so I think that you will all find it very worthwhile.”

This week’s LL meeting will be this Tuesday, September 29, 2009 from 8 – 10pm on campus in ETC 2.132. Here’s a map: http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/etc.html If you have any questions, just call me (Lauren) at 210-413-6419.

This week’s meeting is going to be great, so don’t miss out! Social hour at Posse East will follow.

This Tuesday, September 22, 2009, Libertarian Longhorns will be attending a monthly business meeting of the Travis County Libertarian Party. In addition to broadening our connections with the greater libertarian community in Austin, we will be voicing appreciation for their monetary contribution to our upcoming conference, and telling them a little bit about what we have planned for this semester. It is because of TCLP’s support that we are able to have such an incredible speaker line-up and an event that all of Texas is going to hear about. We’d love it if everyone could attend.

We will be meeting at the Double Dave’s Pizza http://tinyurl.com/nqw3ml behind Posse to carpool at 6 pm. We will leave at 6:15 pm so that we can arrive by 6:45. The meeting is at the Old Quarry Branch Library at 7051 Village Center Drive. http://tinyurl.com/nknjax

They will also be hosting a social hour afterwards at 8:30 pm at the nearby El Arroyo Restaurant at 7032 Wood Hollow Drive. http://tinyurl.com/m93uyu ; Visitors are welcome at both events and this could be a great opportunity to expand your libertarian network if you ever plan to run for public office. Hope to see you there!

If you have any questions, just contact us at libertarian.longhorns@gmail.com.

I should note that even though we have the room *reserved* from 7-10pm the talk won’t be THAT long. But, we have the room available should we wish to linger for a while for some fun discussion.

Date: Monday, September 7, 2009

Time: 7:00pm – 10:00pm

Location: La Madeline Restaurant (meeting room)

Street: 3418 N Lamar Blvd (Around 34th and Lamar)

City/Town: Austin, TX

Dr. Jim Lark from the University of Virginia will be presenting “What is Libertarianism?” to us in our first special event of the Fall semester. If you’ve ever wondered what a libertarian would say about X, Y, or Z, or just want to find out what it truly is that we think about how the world works, this is the talk for you!
NOTE the non-campus location (although it is CLOSE to campus) because the university refuses to reserve rooms for meetings on Labor Day… So, we have reserved the special meeting room at La Madeline from 7-10pm on Monday night. Make sure to bring a little cash for some of their great coffee, pastries, and desserts! Alternatively, you can, of course, just treat yourself to dinner.
And speaking of Labor Day, we will also be indirectly acting in gentle protest of this obtrusive government holiday that celebrates how Unions can coerce individuals and businesses on a regular basis.

See you there!
