Dear fellow defenders of liberty,
I have so much to tell you about what has happened this summer and the exciting things we have planned for this coming semester! So first, let me give you the bullet-point list of what’s going on, and then I’ll tackle the list one by one.
- Students for Liberty Texas Conference on Sat. Oct. 24 – WE NEED MONEY!
- Start Fresh Fair on Tues. August 25th from 11am-3pm
- New Semester Meeting Schedule – TUESDAY NIGHTS
- Partnering with TCLP for Candidate Workshops
- Special Event with Dr. Jim Lark on Labor Day Mon. Sep. 5th
- The last Summer Meetup – Thurs. August 20, 5pm, Posse East
If this isn’t an indication that LL/YAL isn’t going places, I don’t know what will convince you. Read on…
(1) I want to give you the most important thing first – mark your calendar for Saturday October 24, 2009. On this fateful day, we will be hosting the Students for Liberty Texas Conference and we intend to make it the biggest and best of all the SFL regional conferences out there. You might have seen this on our newly-redesigned website, but if you haven’t already check it out right now:
http://libertarianlonghorns.com/2009/08/11/sfltc-announce/
This is a huge deal, and I want every LL/YAL member to make every effort to be there. Take note of the amazing speakers we already have lined up for you: Tom Woods, Mary Ruwart, Anthony Gregory… the list goes on and on! This is the biggest event we’ve ever done, and so we need BIG support from each and every one of you to make it a success. It is intended to be free for students, but please consider making a small donation to our conference fund. In fact, I hope you will tell your parents about this as well, especially if they are libertarians. We need all the help we can get, so any donations from parents who want to further your libertarian education would be more than welcome. We have a ChipIn.com event set up for this very purpose. Please send it along to your friends and family and invite them to come or to support us! Here is the ChipIn.com webpage:

I can’t tell you how important it is that you help us raise money for this event – our goal is to raise $4000. If we start right now we can do it! In fact, if each of you receiving this message donated $10 or convinced your parents or friends to donate $10, we would easily raise over half that amount in no time! If that amount were $20, we would be DONE. No more money needed! Please help me make this happen.
(2) If you are around Austin the day before classes start, Tuesday August 25th, come join us at the Start Fresh Fair on the West Mall and spread the word about LL/YAL. We’ll be out there from 11am to 3pm, but the most important hours for talking to people are the lunch hours from 11:30am-1:30pm. Let’s show the Demopublicans that we mean business by putting our best foot forward from day one!
(3) We are making a significant change this semester to our weekly meeting schedule, so please take special note: Our meetings will from now on be on TUESDAY evenings, starting at 8pm. Furthermore, we will have regular meetings every other week. So – write this down – our first two meetings will be TUESDAY, September 1 and September 15 at 8pm. The room is TBA since we have to reserve it on the first day of classes. I will try to get a room in the ETC, the same place we met last year. Look for the event announcement as we draw closer to the date. On off weeks, we will usually have other special events, such as our tradition of Libertarian Movie Nights and…
(4) Partnering with the Travis County Libertarian Party for Candidate Workshops. Executive Director of the Texas Libertarian Party Robert Butler gave us a taste last semester of his excellent training courses for people interested in local activism, and this semester we have the opportunity each month to learn something new from him. The first two dates for these meetings are Tuesday, September 8 and October 6 starting at 7pm (dates in November and December will be announced later).
(5) We are excited to bring back Dr. Jim Lark from the University of Virginia to speak to us once again! Mark your calendar for Monday evening September 7th, when we will spurn that vile government holiday, Labor Day, with a discussion of the origins of libertarianism with Dr. Lark. Again, look for the Facebook event for the exact place and time.
(6) One week from today, Thursday, August 20, I hope you will join me at the Posse East (San Jacinto and Duval) at 5pm for our last Summer Meetup event. Come to chill, eat, drink, and discuss liberty, the news of the day, or whatever else is on your mind.
Thanks for making it through all of this, I’ll be seeing you soon!
For Liberty!
